BRISTOL, Tenn. – In the first regular season regional rankings, the King University men's wrestling team moved up to eighth in the D2Wrestle.com Coaches' Poll. Along with the team ranking, the Tornado have nine individuals ranked at their respective weight class.
King was ranked 11th in the preseason poll and following the first month of action, they have moved up to eighth in the Super Region 2 rankings.
In the individual rankings, Bryce Killian leads the way as he is ranked second at 141 pounds. Following his stellar opening month, Joey Mammolenti moved up to fourth at 174 pounds. Mammolenti has placed at all three tournaments this season, winning the King Open, taking second at the Kaufman/Brand Open and finishing sixth at the Southeast Open. He owns a record of 11-3 this year. Killian hasn't competed in any events for the Tornado this season.
Dustin Kirk moved up two spots to fifth at 133 pounds and freshman Ethyn Ewing jumped into the rankings at 149 pounds, coming in fifth as well. Ewing finished in the top eight at the Southeast Open before taking fifth at the Kaufman/Brand Open the following week. Ewing then won the King Open and ended the month with a 9-4 record on the season. In his first season competing for the Tornado, Kirk is off to a solid start, holding a 6-4 record. He finished fifth at the Kaufman/Brand Open and followed that with a first place finish at the King Open.
Reed Jacks and Eldon Valery, Jr., both moved up in the rankings in their respective weight classes and are ranked sixth in the region. At 125 pounds, Jacks is 5-4 on the season, taking fourth at the Kaufman/Brand Open and finishing first at the King Open. Valery also took home a championship at the King Open and finished sixth at the Kaufman/Brand Open.
Cory Collins, Elijah Seay and Cody Davis all jumped into the rankings this month. Collins is ranked seventh at 157 pounds while Seay and Davis are both ranked eighth, Seay at 184 pounds and Davis at 285 pounds. In his first season at King, Collins is 4-3 in the early season, and won all three of his matches at the King Open to take first place. Seay, also a freshman is 5-3 on the season. He started by finishing in the top eight of the Southeast Open after reaching the quarterfinals. He then took second at the King Open. Davis capped his month with a 4-2 sudden victory in King's dual victory over Belmont Abbey College and is 1-2 on the season.
The Tornado will be in action again on December 17-18 at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, Ind.
