BRISTOL, Tenn. – In their final home duals of the season, the King University men's wrestling team won both bouts in impressive fashion. The Tornado opened the day with a 43-4 victory over Ohio Valley University before Garrett Fosdyck took a win in double overtime at 285 to give King a narrow 24-21 win over Coker College.
The Tornado dominated the dual with Ohio Valley from the onset as Reed Jacks took a 9-4 win over Tyree Gardner at 125 pounds. D'Marcus Spencer kept the momentum rolling with a pin of Cory Parsons in 28 seconds. Bryce Killian then took a 17-8 major decision over Josue Rodriguez at 141 pounds before Chance Smith defeated Nick Varazashlvili to give King a 16-0 lead. JA Jones followed with yet another pin, topping Tyler Green in 5:49 before Ohio Valley got on the board with a major decision at 165 pounds.
However, Travis Edwards pinned Austin Andill in 4:41 at 174 to swing the momentum back to King. At 184, Blaike Henry followed with a pin of Ben Willard in 6:03 before Eldon Valery, Jr. took a 5-3 decision in overtime to top Kobina Henriques at 197 pounds. King got a forfeit at 285 to take the dual 43-4.
In the final dual of the day, King fell behind Coker early as the Cobras' Mikel Nelson won by pin at 125 pounds. However, Spencer and Killian brought the Tornado back with wins at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively. Spencer took a 3-1 victory over Charlie Huff following a takedown with three seconds left, and Killian won a 9-5 decision over Walker Barfield.
Coker regained a six point lead following a pin at 149, but Jones answered with another pin at 157 over Derek Rohermel in 2:12 to knot the dual at 12 apiece. Edwards then gave King their first lead when he took a 12-2 major decision over Phillip Burrows at 165 pounds. Nevertheless, the Cobras regained an 18-16 lead with a pin at 174 pounds before Blaike Henry gave the lead back to the Tornado. Henry took a tech fall win over Jacob Ralph by the score of 17-2 to give King a 21-18 lead going into the final two bouts.
At 197 pounds, Robert Parland held a 1-0 lead over Valery after two periods, but Valery came back to force overtime. However, Parland scored the first points of the overtime session to take the bout 3-1 and even the dual score at 21.
In the final bout of the day, Fosdyck took on Austin Atkins at 285 pounds. Atkins held a 1-0 lead after two periods, but Fosdyck evened the score in the third period to force overtime. Neither competitor scored in the first overtime, and Fosdyck chose the down position to start the second overtime. The sophomore escaped right away to take a point and held a 2-1 lead after the 30 second session. In the second 30 second period, Fosdyck started on top and didn't allow Atkins to escape to take the narrow 2-1 victory, giving King the 24-21 win.
King will be in action again next Sunday at the Maryville Duals in St. Louis, Mo.
