INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – King Men's Wrestling began their day strongly tallying three pins to pace a 16-point victory over Maryville University. King could not complete the sweep following a 29-12 loss to the University of Indianapolis in their first dual competitions of the season.
KING (TN) 30, NO. 15 MARYVILLE 14
Jerrelle McCabe (Virginia Beach, Va.) began the opening bout with a pin over Brandon Oshiro (125#) at the two-minute mark of the second period to give King an early 6-0 lead. A forfeit gave the Tornado nine-point edge over the Saints before Maryville tightened up with a second win by decision to cut the lead in half, 12-6. Jeremy Miller (Madison, Tenn.) dominated the early seconds of the second period and pinned Christian Loges to give rebuild King's lead back to 12 points. The heavyweights sealed the victory for King with Dyvon Passmore's pin over Nick Burghardt in the 174-pound division followed by Brandon Tressler's major decision win over Ryan Beltz to seal a victory, 27-10. Garrett Fosdyck added another victory to close out the dual on a good note, defeating Morgan Denson, 7-6.
Maryville entered the bout ranked No. 15 in NCAA Division II in the coaches' poll released on Jan. 3.
KING (TN) 12, INDIANAPOLIS (RV) 29
King's dual match against the University of Indianapolis did not fare as well after the Greyhounds won five consecutive bouts to close out the day. Earning wins for King were sophomore Colin Crume (Mishawaka, Ind./UW-Parkside) at 133 and Jeremy Miller at 157. Both Crume and Miller pinned their opponents to account for King's only points in the match. Crume earned a fall over Paul Beck with 27 seconds remaining in the first period. Miller pinned Lucas Rooney 55 seconds into the second period.
Indianapolis received votes in the latest NCAA Division II poll and was the first team outside of the top-20 list.
The duals were the first for King (1-1) this season after participating in five open tournaments earlier this season. They will head to Vienna, W.Va. to take on Ohio Valley University in a dual meet on Jan. 15 at 6 p.m. Their next home action will be on Jan. 27 in a dual against Findlay (Ohio) at 12 p.m.
