Day One of Super Region Two Tournament Complete
EDMOND, Okla. – Nationally-ranked King College Men's Wrestling sits in sole possession of second place after the first day of the Super Region Two Championships, held in Edmond, Oklahoma. Eight King grapplers have an opportunity to be sent to Nationals after day one of the tournament.
No. 2 Frank Morgan (Maynardville, Tenn.) won his only match of the day in a fall over Cooper Hayes (Ouachita Baptist) at 3:37. He will wrestle No. 3 Jarrett Edison (UCO) in the semifinals for the chance to compete for his second consecutive regional championship.
Dondricus Anderson (Macon, Ga.) rolled through his first two matches with a fall over Thomas Redmon (Truman) just 37 seconds into their bout and then registering a 7-4 decision over No. 5 Charles Weber of Limestone. Anderson will defend his No. 4 regional ranking against No. 1 Jacob Southwick.
After receiving a first-round bye, Jerrelle McCabe (Virginia Beach, Va.) won his only match of the day, upsetting No. 4 seed Ryan Brooks from host school Central Oklahoma. McCabe, the five seed in his division, edged out Evans with a 5-4 decision. He will begin Sunday's action against No. 1 Garrett Evans (Ouachita Baptist) in the 125 semifinal bout.
No. 6 Cullen King (Memphis, Tenn.) breezed past Adli Edwards (Ashland), pinning him in the second period of their 133-pound matchup. He will wrestle unranked Stephen Pastor (Tiffin) who upset No. 2 Eric Mateo (Central Missouri).
Tywan Claxton, ranked first in the region at 141 pounds, won his only match of the day in a 9-2 decision over Daniel Mandara (Ashland).
Jeremy Miller (No. 5) opened the day strong, pinning Alex Betts (Findlay) in the second period of his first match before falling into the loser's bracket at 157. After splitting his first two bouts, Miller rebounded strong with his second pin of the day. The Madison, Tenn., native recorded a fall to eliminate Zebuland Spicer (Central Missouri) in the opening minute of the second period. He needs to win two bouts on Sunday for a third place finish.
No. 4 Patrick Spano (Tampa, Fla.) lost a close 5-4 decision to No. 5 Chris Watson (UCO) but won his next two bouts over Christopher Baker of Tiffin University (TF, 16-0) and Joshua Wells of Truman (D, 4-0). He will wrestle the winner of No. 6 Daniel McGillivray / No. 2 Mason True for the right to continue toward a third place finish.
Brandon Tressler is still alive after splitting his first two matches of the opening day.
King, ranked 18th in the country in NCAA Division II, sits behind host Central Oklahoma (73.0) for second place (63.0) in the team standings. King has an opportunity to send as many as eight wrestlers to the National Tournament after day one action. Currently, five King Tornado are scheduled to compete in a semifinal bout, Sunday.
The top four in each weight division will be granted the opportunity to compete at the National Tournament on March 9-10 in Pueblo, Colorado. The double-elimination tournament will conclude on Sunday, Feb. 26, with wrestling beginning at 12:00 p.m. and championship matches beginning at 5:15 p.m.
