King Tornado-Tosses Knights in Regional Dual Match

King Tornado-Tosses Knights in Regional Dual Match
LAURINBURG, N.C. – King College Men's Wrestling easily handled St. Andrew's Presbyterian College (Laurinburg, N.C.) in their second dual match of the season, 40-3, on Wednesday night. The Tornado nearly shut out the Knights, keeping them scoreless through the meet's first nine matches.

King rolled through their first four bouts registering two major decisions and a technical fall. In those matches King outscored the Knights by a combined score of 51-10. Jerelle McCabe (Virginia Beach, Va.) led the meet off with a 12-2 major decision over Eric Brown in the 125-pound division.

Nic Stella (Sweet Home, N.Y.) registered the first of the team's two technical falls by defeating Nick Sauceda (149#), 21-4. Patrick Spano (Tampa, Fla.) pinned Luke Gregory 2:13 into the bout for the Tornado's sixth straight bout win of the day before Dyvon Passmore (Miami, Fla.) beat Trent Harris by technical fall, 20-4.

Leading 29-0, the Tornado continued its dominance when Brandon Tressler (Orlando, Fla.) pinned Joshua Price (184#) within the first three minutes of the bout, followed by nationally-ranked Frank Morgan's victory to close out the winning streak for King. The fifth-ranked (197#) Maynardville, Tenn. native registered a major decision over Greg Pattis, 12-1, to put the Tornado up 40-0.

"It feels good to get a win against a regional opponent away from tournament play," said Head Coach Nate Moorman. "The guys are beginning to refocus for the second leg of the season and a few things are starting to come together, but we have to keep working to be where we want to be as individuals and as a team come time for the championships at year's end. This win is a good start toward getting there, though."

The Knight's lone win came from Denny Vaughan (285#) over Dondricus Anderson in a 14-13 decision in the last match of the night. After both sides retired, King came away with a 40-3 victory over St. Andrew's College.

King, ranked 11th in the country by the NCAA in Division II, earns a win in their first of eight dual matches before the Super Regional Tournament (Feb. 24-25). They will continue their road trip to Warrensburg, Mo. to compete in a dual with the University of Central Missouri Mules on Sunday, Jan. 22, before embarking on a three-match home stand beginning on Jan. 25 with current No. 2 Newberry College.
