Morgan and Tressler pick up wins at NCAA DII Nationals
KEARNEY, Neb. - King College's Frank Morgan moved into the quarterfinals of the 197-pound bracket at the NCAA Division II National Championship in Friday's first session, but ended up going into the wrestleback draw.
Morgan, a junior from Maynardsville, Tenn. posted a 4-2 decision over Mercyhurst's Michael Pollard to set up a meeting against Eli Arizmendez, from Grand Canyon. Arizmendez came out on top 4-3. Morgan will face off against Daniel Stevenson later in session two. The winner moves into the final eight, but the loser's trip ends. The two Super Region II foes will meet for the first time this season. Stevenson was third at the event while Morgan won the weight class.
Fellow Tornado Brandon Tressler (Orlando, Fla.) came up on the short side of a 6-2 decision against Super Region III winner Aaron Norgren, from Minnesota State Mankato. Tressler pinned Mercyhurst's Londele Cox at the 6:50 mark in an elimination match during session two to stay alive. Next for Tressler will be a contest against Upper Iowa's Mitch Schultz to wrap up session two.
In the team standings King's one point put the Tornado in a tie for 23rd. Nebraska Omaha has the top spot thanks to 12 points, two ahead of Western State.
Session two will begin at 7 p.m. with the quarterfinal and eight wrestleback matches to end day one.
