Lady Tornado picks up 72-69 decision over District of Columbia

WASHINGTON, D.C. - King College opened the 2011 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Independent Invitational with a 72-69 win over host University of the District of Columbia Friday.

King, now at 10-15, advances to play Washington Adventist University Saturday at 7 p.m. Washington Adventist was defeated 74-46 by Palm Beach Atlantic (Fla.) University. The District of Columbia has a 3 p.m. contest with Central State (Ohio) University. Central State lost a 70-67 contest to Urbana (Ohio) University and Urbana has a 5 p.m. game against Palm Beach Atlantic.

Ashley Deans (Greeneville, Tenn.) scored 20 points to lead the Lady Tornado. She went 12-for-12 at the free throw line for season highs for makes and attempts for any King player.

Brooke Johnson (Roan Mountain, Tenn.) chipped in 16 points which included four 3-pointers. It was the most points for the sophomore since a 23-point effort on Dec. 1, 2010, against Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) University.

Brittany Kinser (Greeneville, Tenn.) scored 15 points from the bench thanks to a 3-for-3 effort behind the 3-point line.

As a team King was 12-for-21 (57.1 percent) from behind the 3-point line for the highest percentage in a game this season. Overall the Lady Tornado went 22-for-50 (44.0 percent).

The District of Columbia got double-doubles from Lillian McGill and Dohnay Banice. McGill scored 22 points with 14 rebounds while Banice finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

King was able to avenge two earlier losses in the season to District of Columbia. The last time the two played was on Feb. 3 in Bristol with a score of 70-57. On Jan. 8 King was upended 66-62 in a road contest.

The Lady Tornado also won for the fourth straight game, the longest winning streak of the season.
