Top-seeded Lady Tornado prepares for NCCAA Mid-East Regional

BRISTOL, Tenn. - King College will defend the NCCAA Division I Mid-East Region Women's Basketball title this weekend as the Lady Tornado travel to Lookout Mountain, Ga., for the region tournament that starts Friday.

First for King, the event's top seed, will be a 7 p.m. contest against host Covenant (Ga.) College, the No. 4 seed.

The Lady Tornado, No. 25 in the NCCAA Burbridge rankings, posted an 11-16 record which includes wins in eight of the last 11 games and a five-game winning streak. King was the runner up at the Independent Invitational Tournament hosted by the University of District of Columbia Feb. 25-27.

Away from home King has gone 5-10, but the five wins have been in the last seven contests away from the Student Center.

Covenant, No. 45 among NCCAA teams, went 5-20 in 2010-11. Of the five wins, four were at home and all were in the last six contests played at Lookout Mountain, Ga.

The meeting will be the first time this season King has played a NCAA Division III foe while Covenant has not faced a NCAA Division II team in 2010-11.

The last time the two squads played was on Feb. 27, 2009, in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal contest that went to Covenant 92-84 in overtime. King's last trip to Covenant resulted in a 76-56 setback on Nov. 22, 2008. The Lady Tornado won the meeting in Lookout Mountain during the 2007-08 season 80-56.

In Friday's other semifinal No. 2 seed Tennessee Temple University and No. 3 seed Oakland City (Ind.) University play at 5 p.m. Tennessee Temple was No. 34 with Oakland City No. 38 in last Burbridge report.

The semifinal winners play at 2 p.m. Saturday for the Mid-East Region Championship and an automatic bid to the NCCAA Division I Women's Basketball National Tournament March 17-19 at Grace (Ind.) College.

Last season King defeated Tennessee Temple 88-74 in a semifinal contest and then knocked off top-seed Bluefield (Va.) College 72-70 to capture the region championship.
