GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The King University softball was able to avenge a pair of losses earlier this week as they capped play at the Pioneer Classic with a 5-1 win over UVa-Wise. The Tornado rolled through the tournament with a 5-0 mark to improve their overall record back to .500.
Hannah Light tossed a perfect top of the first inning before the Tornado (7-7) jumped on the Cavaliers in the bottom of the frame. Chrissy Melcher started the inning with a single through the left side, and after an out Fallon Thomas ripped her second home run of the tournament, a bomb to right field to give King a 2-0 lead.
UVa-Wise (4-3) got one run back in the second inning in a groundout, but Light stranded runners on the corners.
The Tornado added on to their lead in the third inning as Samantha Cole started the frame with a double to left field. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Melcher drove her in with a double to left field. Melcher later scored on a single up the middle to push King's lead to 4-1 after three innings. King added an insurance run in the fourth, and that was all Light need to earn her sixth win of the season.
The senior only allowed the one run on three hits, and struck out 10 in the complete game victory. Melcher went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and one run batted in to pace the Tornado offense. Thomas followed, going 2-for-4 and driving in three runs.
King opens Conference Carolinas play on Saturday when they travel to Erskine College. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
