High Point, NC - King University Softball went 5-1 and 4-0 in Conference Carolinas play over the weekend with impressive play from Sophomore Shortstop Christina Melcher and Junior Pitcher Hannah Light earning the two players this weeks Conference Carolinas Softball Awards.
Christina Melcher has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas Softball Player of the Week during week five of the 2012 – 2013 Softball season. She led her team in hits with 12 total for the weekend and added 6 runs for the Lady Tornado. She finished the weekend hitting an impressive .632 with 2 walks and only 2 strikeouts. In 19 plate appearances, she had 12 total hits with 2 of those hits being doubles. She was also solid in the field only committing 3 total errors in six complete games. In Friday's conference opener, with preseason favorite North Greenville, Melcher went 2 for 3 against and helped lead a 4 run come from behind rally in the 6th inning to secure their first conference victory of the 2013 season.
Hannah Light has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas Softball Pitcher of the Week during week five of the 2012 – 2013 Softball season. She pitched just over 24 innings and only allowed 2 earned runs on 16 total hits. She had a total of 27 strikeouts and only 5 walks with an overall era of 0.57. She had a complete game shutout against conference foe Pfeiffer on Sunday only allowing 3 hits and striking out 7 Falcon batters. She finished the weekend with 3 total wins and 1 save. Her solid play on the mound all weekend proved to be what the Lady Tornado needed to start the 2013 conference schedule and she led her team on the mound to an impressive 4-0 start.
The Lady Tornado are back in action Thursday, March 14th when they play host to region opponent Lincoln Memorial University, first pitch is set for 2 p.m. Conference Carolinas action will resume this weekend as King travels to Mount Olive on Saturday and Barton on Sunday.
