The Lady Tornado offense got on track early to end an eight-game losing streak.
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – King raced out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back in defeating Shepherd, 8-2, on Sunday at the Pioneer Classic, hosted by Tusculum.
Junior Cassie Ringstaff (Richlands, Va.) got the King offense going early with an RBI-single in the first to score sophomore Christina Melcher (Orlando, Fla.). The Lady Tornado then added three more runs in the second to make it 4-0. Freshman Octavia Lewis-Rand (Columbus, Ga.) hit an RBI-triple, and senior Aubree Hutt (Bristol, Va.) and Melcher later added RBI-singles.
Junior Fallon Thomas (Bristol, Va.) smacked a solo home run in the third to make it 5-1, King. Shepherd scored in the bottom-of-the-third to cut the deficit to 5-2.
King added one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to widen the margin to 8-2, which was the final score. Eight of King's nine hitters had at least one hit in the game.
Junior Hannah Light (Coeburn, Va.) pitched a complete game for the Lady Tornado to improve to 2-7 this season. Light gave up just one earned run on six hits and had 10 strikeouts.
The Lady Tornado will be back in action at the KU Softball Complex against Lincoln Memorial with a doubleheader on Tuesday, February 26, with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
