Lady Tornado Drop Pair of Games to USC Aiken
Bristol, Tenn- The King University Softball team lost a pair of games to USC Aiken Monday afternoon, dropping game one 4-1 in nine innings and dropping game two by 5-0 decision.
Game One USC Aiken 4 King University 1 F/9 innings
King sent junior hurler Hannah Light to the circle in game one of Monday's doubleheader. Light held the Lady Pacers at bay through seven innings of work, allowing just four hits and no runs. USC Aiken starter Taylor Morgan was equally impressive, holding the Lady Tornado offense to just one hit, a leadoff single by Junior Cassie Ringstaff in the first inning, through her seven innings of work.
USC Aiken was first to break the scoreless tie, plating a run in the top of the eighth on a RBI single to center field by Brittney Williamson, giving USC Aiken a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the eighth, sophomore Stephanie Rodriguez grounded out to second base to start the inning, advancing senior Aubree Hutt to third on the play. Cassie Ringstaff then delivered a sacrifice fly to shallow left, allowing Hutt to score, making it 1-1.
USC Aiken would finally break the game open in the top half of the ninth, plating three runs on three hits, with the big hit coming from a two-rbi single from Sarah Montei. The Lady Tornado brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom half of the inning, but Lady Pacer hurler Taylor Morgan would strikeout Freshman Octavia Lewis-Rand to the end the threat, and give USC Aiken the 4-1 victory in game one.
The Lady Tornado recorded just two hits in game one, both singles. Ringstaff led the way going 1-for-3 with a run batted in. Jordan Johnson was also 1-for-2 with a walk.
Light went the distance for King, tossing nine innings, allowing eight hits, four runs (two earned), fanning five and also registering two walks. With the tough luck loss, Light drops to 1-4 on the young season. Pacer Starter Taylor Morgan also logged nine innings of work, allowing just 2 hits and one unearned run. Morgan walked five and registered 11 strikeouts.
Game Two USC Aiken 5 King University 0
USC Aiken jumped out to a 2-0 lead through two innings of play, fueled by a Brandy Bossle two rbi double to right field. The Lady Pacers would plate another run the top half of the fourth, this time on another Bossle double to right center, making it 3-0 USC Aiken after four innings of play.
The Lady Tornado offense struggled once again to get anything going, mustering just two hits through five innings against Pacer starter India Kornegay.
USC Aiken would plate two more in the seventh inning, on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly to make the score 5-0.
Kornegay would retire the Lady Tornado in order in the bottom half, completing the shutout and giving the Pacers the 5-0 game two victory.
Freshman Morgan White tossed seven innings in game two, allowing eight hits, five runs (four earned), with one walk and one strikeout. White drops to 1-2 on the year.
Kornegay improves to 1-2 on the year, tossing seven innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits. She also registered nine punchouts.
Hannah Smith and Aubree Hutt collected the only two hits for the offense in game two, both singles.
With the sweep, USC Aiken improves to 3-3 on the season. The Lady Tornado now sit at 2-8 on the year. King will hit the road for the their next contest, traveling to Newberry College on Wednesday February 20th. First pitch is set for 2pm.
