BURLINGTON, N.C. – In the championship of the Conference Carolinas Softball Tournament, sixth seed North Greenville University held a 2-0 lead over Mount Olive College and looked to take the title in the seventh inning. However, the Trojans rallied to even the score, and eventually won the game 3-2 in the 10th inning.
North Greenville (20-19-1) got on the board first as Amy Nagel crushed a two-out double to right field that scored Kimberly Robertson and Rachel Glazebrook to give the Crusaders a 2-0 lead after three innings.
The Mount Olive (33-13) offense came alive in the seventh inning as Katie Moore worked an 11-pitch at bat into a walk. Kelsey Akers followed with a double to left center that plated here and pulled the Trojans within one and put the tying run on second with no outs. Glazebrook got a pair of outs, Savannah Becker kept fouling off pitch after pitch. Finally, on the 13th pitch of the at bat, she got one she could handle and ripped a single off the shortstop’s glove into center to score Akers and even the game at 2-2.
Both pitchers matched each other pitch-for-pitch in extra innings until Mount Olive sparked a rally in the 10th inning. Jennifer Jones started the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second. She was then put out at third on a fielder’s choice that put Rebekah McDaniel and first base. Lauren McGrath pinch ran for her, and Erin Brogan followed with a bloop single to left field that put runners on the corners. Danielle Mitchell came up a ripped a single to center field that plated McGrath and gave the Trojans their third win of the day, and second extra inning win of the day.
Akers led the Trojans, going 3-for-4 while Robertson paced the Crusader offense going 3-for-4.
The Mount Olive win hands North Greenville their first loss of the tournament meaning there will be a winner-take-all championship game on Monday at 11:00 a.m.
