Mount Olive escapes upset minded Flying Fleet

BURLINGTON, N.C. – In The fourth game of the day, second seeded Mount Olive College spotted seventh seed Erskine College five runs in the first inning, but eventually came back to win. The Trojans only allowed one more Flying Fleet run over the final seven innings to take a 7-6 win in eight innings.

Morgan Purcell came up with a two-run ground-rule double to open the scoring in the first inning before Whitney Brown capped the scoring with a two-run single to left center, giving Erskine (14-23-2) an early 5-0 lead.

Mount Olive (29-12) got on the board with run in the first inning, and tacked on one more in the second. Jennifer Jones and Kelsey Akers registered back-to-back run scoring singles in the fifth inning to pull the Trojans within one run. Mount Olive finally evened the tally on a Katie Moore double in the sixth inning.

However, the Flying Fleet quickly grabbed the lead on a Purcell single in the seventh inning. Nevertheless, the Trojans evened the score again in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.

After Mount Olive escaped the top of the eighth with no runs scored, their offense went to work in the bottom of the inning. With two outs and two on, Jones hit a groundball to third base. The ball was misplayed allowing the winning run to score and move the Trojans into the winners bracket.

Moore, Akers, Jones and Brogan all led Mount Olive with two hits apiece with Jones driving in two. Purcell and Kelsey Spurrier paced the Erskine offense with two hits each. Purcell drove in three runs and scored another.
