BURLINGTON, N.C. – Coker College scored early and often to defeat Queens University and move into the winners bracket of the Conference Carolinas softball tournament. The Cobras scored three runs in the first inning en route to the 7-4 win.
Abbey Younger came up with the big hit of the first inning, driving in two runs with two outs to give the Cobras (25-16) the 3-0 lead. Lauren Phillips drew a bases loaded walk in the second to push the lead to 4-0.
Queens (22-20) got on the board on a Kaitlyn Bodine home run in the third before Coker stretched the lead back to four with a run in the top of the fourth. Queens got within one with three runs in the fourth inning, one coming on a squeeze play, and two on a Whitney Britt single.
However, Coker tacked on single runs in each of the sixth and the seventh innings to take the game 7-4.
Jaclin Poole paced the Coker offense, going 4-for-4 with two runs batted in while Bryant McLendon went 3-for-5. For Queens it was Bodine who went 2-for-2 with one run batted in and two runs scored.
