Strong Up the Middle! Four Named to Softball All-Conference Team

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Four King College softball players were named to the Conference Carolinas All-Conference teams, including three to First Team honors, at Thursday night's tournament team banquet. Christina Melcher, Cora Milliken, and Fallon Thomas all earned First Team honors and Hannah Light earned a place on the Second Team.

Christina Melcher was named to the All-Conference First Team behind an incredible freshman season hitting .402 overall and an incredible .422 through 22 conference games this season. The Orlando, Fla. native led the team in batting average, runs scored (47), hits (66), total bases (95), and shared the team lead with nine stolen bases. On April 12, Melcher put together a perfect 9-for-9 day at the plate, scoring seven times and driving home five runs. She is currently riding a nine-game hit streak into the Conference Carolinas Tournament.

Cora Milliken was the second of three named to the All-Conference First Team and the second freshman to have done so. The Jacksonville, Fla. native locked down second base and created a strong middle infield with Christina Melcher, while also catching five games this season. Milliken hit .331 overall and .387 in conference play. Milliken has hit safely in her last 10 league games leading into the tournament. She had 10 multi-hit games this season, including a career-high three hits against Virginia Intermont (March 20) before posting a career-high three RBI later that week against Pfeiffer for the first of two times this season.

Fallon Thomas posted one of the biggest single-season turnarounds in program history en route to a place on the All-Conference First Team. The sophomore catcher hit .344 overall and finished with a team-high eight Hannah Light helped King turn their season around after home runs and 47 RBI. She also led the team in slugging percentage (.618), walks (29), and shared the lead in extra-base hits (19). She posted a career-high three hits in a single game four times this season and a personal best four RBI on March 26 at Pfeiffer University. She finished the season with a perfect fielding percentage and threw out 14-of-23 runners attempting to steal against her.

Hannah Light helped King turn their season around after returning to the diamond on March 17. She earned Second Team All-Conference honors after going 16-4 overall in the circle in 18 starts and 25 total appearances this season. Without Light in the lineup, the Lady Tornado were 6-9 but went 23-8 down the stretch upon her return. Light's 1.41 overall earned run average led the league while her league-only ERA (1.43) ranked fifth. Her strikeout-to-walk ratio was an incredible 57:3 as she amassed 114 total punchouts on the year and walked only six. She struck out a career 10 hitters twice just three days apart, doing so against Mount Olive (April 14) and in the regular season finale against St. Andrews (April 17). In her final three starts, Light struck out 29 batters and walked none in 20.0 innings pitched.

King is poised to begin its first run in the Conference Carolinas Tournament this weekend with an opening round matchup against No. 3 Queens University of Charlotte (28-22, 16-5) as the tournament's sixth seeded team. They will play at Coker College's Byerly Field in Hartsville, S.C. on Friday, April 20, at 10 a.m. Depending on the result of their game with the Royals, the Lady Tornado will play either at 2 or 4 p.m. that day.
