Conference Preseason Poll Places King Tenth

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Respect is an item that will have to earn on the diamond for the King College softball team this season as it enters its first season as a member of Conference Carolinas. The Lady Tornado were picked to finish tenth of eleven teams in the 2012 Conference Carolinas Coaches Poll, released Friday.

King comes off of a 2011 season where they finished 13-27 overall and are just two years removed from a NCCAA World Series bid, its first national tournament appearance in program history. The Lady Tornado return its top hitter to the 2012 lineup in Kendall Brabson, who earned NCAA Mid-East All-Region Team honors last year leading the team in hitting .323 and multi-hit games (12). The senior from Bean Station, Tenn. sported a .976 fielding percentage as King's regular first baseman and playing in a team-high 40 games, starting 39.

Erskine College took the top spot, receiving nine of the available 11 first-place votes. They return much of its roster from last year's NCAA Regional Tournament team, including Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Year and Conference Tournament MVP, Kelsey Spurrier. The Flying Fleet also return four additional All-Conference selections from a year ago.

Limestone College was ranked second, receiving two first-place votes, followed by Lees-McRae, Queens (N.C.) and Coker.  North Greenville and Pfeiffer tied for the seven spot before Belmont Abbey came in at ninth. Rounding out the poll was Barton in eleventh.

The Navy and Scarlett will host its first opening day at the new King College Softball Complex on Feb. 17, opening the season with a doubleheader against regional rival Emory and Henry at 1:30 p.m. The Lady Tornado played six games at the new complex last season after its completion in March.
