TIGERVILLE, S.C. - King College split a Saturday softball doubleheader at North Greenville (S.C.) University with a 12-3 Lady Tornado win in game two after North Greenville took the opener 3-1.
The split moved King to 10-24 while North Greenville ended the day at 13-16.
In the second contest King exploded for a dozen runs which tied the team high in a contest of 2011. The Lady Tornado scored three times in the first, two more in the third with a fifth-inning score before six in the sixth. The six-run inning outscored the output from 26 games earlier in the season. The 12 runs helped boost King's scoring average up from 3.0 runs per game up to 3.3.
Tiffany Brand (Knoxville, Tenn.) went 3-for-4 while Stephanie Mueller (Mt. Washington, Ky.) was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Tiffany Harris (Tazewell, Va.) also drove in three runs while Cassie Ringstaff (Richlands, Va.) and Lauren Wilson (Abingdon, Va.) scored three times apiece.
Rachael Wilmoth (Morristown, Tenn.) completed six innings with three runs on the same number of hits for her fifth win of 2011.
In game one King tied things with bases loaded walk issued to Shauna Haga (Blountville, Tenn.) in the fourth. Pinch runner Natasha Dean (Church Hill, Tenn.) was on third for Kendall Brabson (Bean Station, Tenn.) who singled to start the frame.
Samantha Watts (Nashville, Tenn.) tossed six innings with five hits which led to three runs, two earned. She struck out five with only one walk.
North Greenville's Laura Hopper had two of the squad's five hits with a run scored.
The home team answered King's fourth inning run with the go ahead and an insurance score in the bottom half of the inning.
Taylor Roof went all seven innings with one run on four hits and eight strikeouts.
King welcomes Carson-Newman (Tenn.) College for a 2 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday. When the two played in Jefferson City on Feb. 23 Carson Newman won both games, 9-0 and 9-1.
