SAVANNAH, Ga. - King College picked up the first win of the softball season Friday with a 1-0 win over the University of Rio Grande (Ohio) on the opening day of the Boomhah Smash Hit Tournament hosted by Savannah College of Art & Design. In the Lady Tornado's next game Brewton-Parker came out with a 7-1 win.
The opening game's only run was posted in the fourth inning when Fallon Thomas (Bristol, Va.) singled to left with two outs to drive in Aubree Hutt (Bristol, Va.). Hutt started the rally as a pinch runner for Kendall Brabson (Bean Station, Tenn.) who singled to center. Hutt stole second before a walk to Christy Kooch (Knoxville, Tenn.) and the eventual game-winning hit.
Samantha Watts (Nashville, Tenn.) was the winner on the mound as she scattered four hits with four strikeouts.
Brabson and Thomas both had two hits in the contest.
In the second contest Stephanie Mueller (Mt. Washington, Ky.) provided the offense for the Lady Tornado with a solo home run in the sixth inning.
Tiffany Brand (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Tasha Dean (Church Hill, Tenn.) both went 2-for-3.
On the mound, Rachael Wilmoth (Morristown, Tenn.) was hit for six runs on 4 1/3 innings.
Brewton-Parker scored four times in the first inning with two more in the fifth and a final score in the sixth.
Heather Snyder and Myia Ashmore each had 2-for-3 efforts. Ashmore had a pair of RBIs.
King, now 1-7 on the season, will play Brewton-Parker again at 10 a.m. Saturday before a noon contest against host SCAD.
