SAVANNAH, Ga. - King College wrapped up the 2011 Boombah Smash Hit Softball weekend Sunday with a pair of setbacks, a 6-3 against the University of Rio Grande (Ohio) and 2-1 versus host Savannah College of Art & Design.
Against Rio Grande, King posted all three runs in the sixth. Cassie Ringstaff (Richlands, Va.), Shauna Haga (Blountville, Tenn.) and Kendall Brabson (Bean Station, Tenn.) each had a RBI in the frame. Ringstaff and Haga's RBIs came on singles while Brabson had a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Tornado had another hit in the inning and the only other single for King was in the fourth after the first 10 batters were retired in order.
Rachael Wilmoth (Morristown, Tenn.) was tagged for the loss.
Rio Grande's Anna Smith went all seven innings and struck out three. Marissa Lennox went 3-for-4 and scored two runs as the team scored a run in six of the seven innings.
SCAD scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth which proved to be the difference.
Christy Kooch (Knoxville, Tenn.) put King in front with a second-inning home run to start the frame.
Aubree Hutt (Bristol, Va.) finished the game 3-for-4.
Samantha Watts (Nashville, Tenn.) had a shutout going until the sixth. She finished with the two runs on seven hits and struck out three.
Lisa Williams tossed all seven innings for SCAD and scattered seven hits with seven strikeouts.
No walks were issued by either pitcher.
Courtney Mienkina had two hits to lead the SCAD offense.
King, at 3-9 on the season, travels across the state line to play Virginia Intermont College a 3 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday.
