Strong offense propels Tornado to a pair of wins

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's volleyball team swept their opponents Saturday afternoon at the Student Center Complex. The Tornado started off the day by defeating Belmont Abbey College 3-0, and proceeded to defeat Bluefield College 3-0 in the later contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED – BELMONT ABBEY

  • The Tornado used an early 4-0 run to take a 5-3 lead over the visiting Crusaders in the first set.
  • King would later use a 6-0 run that was capped off by a Jeff Sprayberry kill from Nick Drooker to take a 14-7 lead over Belmont Abbey.
  • After a Crusader point to make the contest 14-8, the Tornado used another 4-0 run to extend their lead to 18-9. The run featured four straight kills for the Tornado including ones by Sprayberry, Kiel Bell, and Adrian Besson.
  • A kill late in the set by Jon Wheaton would give the Tornado a 23-17 lead. King would go on to close out the set 25-18 and take a 1-0 lead in the contest.
  • Bell started off the second set with a huge kill that came from Drooker to take a 1-0 lead early.
  • King used a 4-0 run midway through the set to take a 14-9 lead over the Crusaders. Bell capped off the run with another kill.
  • The Tornado would use another 4-0 run later in the set to extend their lead to 19-14. Bell rallied off three straight kills during the King run.
  • King went on to defeat the Crusaders 25-19 in the second set and take a 2-0 lead in the contest. Bell recorded five of his team-high ten kills during the set.
  • In the third set, the Tornado trailed 4-7 early, however, bounced back to tie the set 14-14 following a Crusader error.
  • King used a 7-1 run late in the set to take a 21-15 lead and would go on to finish off the Crusaders 25-18 in the third set. The Tornado took the match 3-0 over Belmont Abbey.

FOR THE FOES

  • Liam Maxwell posted a game-high 12 kills for the Crusaders.
  • Brian Long chipped in seven kills for Belmont Abbey.

HOW IT HAPPENED – BLUEFIELD

  • The Tornado used a 5-0 run to take an early 11-5 lead over Bluefield. Dalton Johnson capped off the run with a service ace for King.
  • King would use another 5-0 lead later in the set to extend their lead to 21-12. Sean Kohlhase recorded the final point of the run with a kill from Leo de Quadros.
  • The Tornado would go on to close out the set 25-17 following a Julian Young kill from Chandler Christy. Young's kill was one of his seven during the first set.
  • King used a 7-0 run to jump out to a 7-2 lead over the Rams in the second set. Justin McCarthy capped off the run for the Tornado with a kill from Christy.
  • The Rams would cut into the Tornado lead, however, a Johnson kill pushed the King lead 13-10.
  • A kill by Christy gave the Tornado a 21-15 lead late in the set. The Tornado proceeded to close out the set 25-16 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. McCarthy posted four kills in the set to lead King.
  • In the third set, King trailed 2-4 early, but quickly bounced back to take a 6-4 lead following a 4-0 run by the Tornado. Young would cap off the run with another kill.
  • The two teams battled back and forth throughout a majority of the set, however, 3-0 run late in the set gave King a 24-21 following a McCarthy kill.
  • The Tornado would go on to close out the Rams 25-21 in the third set and defeat Bluefield 3-0 in the match.
  • Johnson led the way for the Tornado with 10 kills and four blocks.
  • Young tied his career-high with nine kills in the contest to go along with six digs.
  • McCarthy posted a career-high eight kills in the match while hitting .375.

FOR THE FOES

  • Alberto Chiaparini led the way for Bluefield with nine kills.
  • Lesharo Clark chipped in seven kills for the Rams.
