Three Tornado named to preseason award watch lists

BRISTOL, Tenn. – With the men's volleyball season around the corner, preseason watch lists were announced last week and three Tornado were named. Jeff Sprayberry, Nick Drooker and Jon Wheaton are all on watch lists for national awards leading into the 2017 season.

Sprayberry, a junior was one of 33 players named to the Karch Kiraly Award preseason watch list, which is presented to the best outside attacker in NCAA Division I-II men's volleyball during the regular season. A season ago, the Oak Forest, Ill., native was selected second team All-Conference Carolinas and set the King school record with 420 kills. He averaged 3.65 kills per set and added 201 digs and 53 blocks.

A fellow junior, Drooker was one of 20 players named to the Lloy Ball Award preseason watch list, which is presented to the best setter in NCAA Division I-II men's volleyball during the regular season. The Richmond, Va., native broke his own school record with 1,018 assists a season ago, a mark that led Conference Carolinas. He ranked sixth in the league with an average of 8.85 assists per set and 232 digs. Drooker ranked 10th in Conference Carolinas with 65 blocks and was fifth in the nation with 54 total service aces.

A sophomore, Wheaton was one of 27 players named to the Ryan Millar Award preseason watch list, which is presented to the best middle attacker in NCAA Division I-II men's volleyball during the regular season. A native of Lockport, Ill., Wheaton led Conference Carolinas and set school records with 113 total blocks and 104 block assists a season ago. Wheaton averaged 1.03 blocks per set and hit .345 with 192 kills.

The Tornado open the season at home on January 10 when they face Lincoln Memorial University at 7:00 p.m.
