King Ranked Fifth in Conference Preseason Poll

Men's Volleyball has been tabbed to finish fifth in 2013 based on the Preseason Coaches' Poll, released today.

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Conference Carolinas has released the Preseason Coaches' Poll for the 2013 men's volleyball season. King has been picked to finish fifth in the nine-team league. Mount Olive was selected as the preseason favorite to finish first.

King comes off of a 2012 season where they finished 10-20 overall and 2-8 against Conference Carolinas opponents. Despite losing their top two scoring threats from last season (James Friddle and Eric Glenn), the Tornado have added some explosive freshman to the mix as well as bring back a core group of returners with an additional year of experience.

Michael Koebel (Sr., Richmond, Va.) returns as the team's leading offensive threat with 171 kills in 2012. Sophomore Mason Casner (Culpepper, Va.) is likely to shore up the middle position while a slew of freshman will get plenty of opportunities to contribute. Freshmen hitters Matthew Lychock (MB/RS), Pele Ili (OH), Zach Prexta (OH/RS), and Eddie Moushikhian (OH/DS) will share reps to fill out the starting lineup while Adrian Lopez (r-Fr., RS/MB) and Ashton Hippenstiel (r-Sr., S) also return and will compete for spots.

Mount Olive was predicted to finish first in 2013 coming off a second straight trip to the Conference Carolinas Tournament championship match. The Trojans received four of the possible nine first-place votes, followed by defending regular and tournament champion Pfeiffer (3) and Limestone (2). King (40 points) placed fifth out of nine teams and just two points from overtaking rival Lees-McRae for fourth position.

The league's men's volleyball programs take another step forward this year adding three new teams to the fold in just their second year as a fully sponsored conference sport.  Belmont Abbey, Coker, and Erskine join the conference this year and will battle for a spot in the six-team conference tournament championship, which will determine the eventual league titleholder this April.

The Tornado open their season at home on Thursday, Jan. 10 when they host preseason favorite Mount Olive in the Student Center Complex. First service is set for 7 p.m. The team will play four games in three days, all at home, when they play Rust (Jan. 11) followed by Belmont Abbey and Quincy in a doubleheader on Jan. 12. Their first seven games of the season will be played at home. Click here for the Tornado's full 2013 schedule.
