MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – In a rematch of last year's Conference Carolinas title match, King took an early one game advantage but fell to the defending tournament champion Mount Olive Trojans. The hosts took the final three games en route to a 3-1 (25-20, 14-25, 21-25, 17-25) final on Friday night.
Jeremy Funk (Lancaster, Pa.) led the Tornado in the first game with five of his seven kills in the match on just six attempts in the opening frame. King hit .500 in the first game but could not sustain such success through the final three.
Alex Rivero responded with four kills in the second set to tie the match up at a game apiece. After jumping out to an 11-6 lead, the Trojans went on a 9-2 run to lead to the tie. In set three King drew within two points, 22-20, in the third set when Tim Ebbecke plus a bad set on the Tornado's end extended the lead to four points and an eventual Trojan win.
Despite Matthew Harper (Matoaca, Va.) and Eric Glenn (Portsmouth, Va.) each posting four kills in the fourth set, Adam Miracle responded with six of his own for Mount Olive to help the hosts to a 17-25 win to claim the match.
Harper finished with a team-high 10 kills on 18 attempts (.278). Glenn finished with nine kills and hit at a team-best .375 clip while adding four block assists. Funk and Stephen Brown (Lawrenceville, Ga.) each finished with seven kills, while Brown added six digs to his line. Ned Parker (Richmond, Va.) claimed 36 of the team's 37 assists and had three kills on four attempts.
The Tornado (5-8, 0-2) will continue their weekend road trip Saturday when they visit Barton College for a 3:00 p.m. first service. King defeated Barton earlier this season at the Mount Olive College Invitational, 3-1.
