King knocks off Conference Carolinas champion Mount Olive, 3-2

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - King College upended Conference Carolinas regular season men's volleyball champion Mount Olive (N.C.) College 3-2 Friday to keep title hopes alive.

King improved to 10-8 with a 4-3 conference record which ties the Tornado with Lees-McRae (N.C.) College for second in the league standings.  Mount Olive ends conference play with a 7-1 mark and 19-7 overall. Mount Olive will host the second-place finisher in the standings on April 21 for the conference championship.

Both King and Lees-McRae have to play at Pfeiffer (N.C.), the Tornado goes there on Tuesday while Lees-McRae has to wait until Saturday. A King victory over Pfeiffer with a Lees-McRae loss sends the Tornado back to Mount Olive for the conference championship match. If Lees-McRae wins it will set up a 2010 Conference Carolinas rematch with Mount Olive. A tie between King and Lees-McRae will send Lees-McRae to the championship contest via the tiebreaker as Lees-McRae won five sets compared to three for the Tornado.

The first set went to King 25-18 while Mount Olive won the next 25-22 followed by a 25-18 third set decision. The Tornado went onto win the fourth and fifth sets 25-16 and 15-11.

James Friddle (Cartersville, Ga.), Eric Glenn (Portsmouth, Va.) and Michael Koebel (Richmond, Va.) all had a dozen kills apiece.

Joel Salva (Lake Mary, Fla.) gave out 46 assists as a part of King's 51 kills.

Friddle also served two aces with three assisted blocks.

Alex Oliveria (Goiania, Brazil) recorded six total blocks, one solo and five assisted.
