King Wraps Up Competition at Liberty Open

Hannah Witt took second in the 3,000-meter run to lead the Tornado while Alexis Robinson and Shelbie Burchfield each had a pair of top-five finishes.

Lynchburg, Va. – King Track & Field competed well against Division I programs for the second consecutive week, this time at the Liberty Open, Jan. 25-Jan. 26.  Senior Hannah Witt (Mountain City, Tenn.) led the Tornado with a second-place finish in the women's 3,000-meter run with a school record time of 10:23.78, just three seconds behind the event winner.  Witt also finished seventh in the one-mile run with a time of 5:19.33.

Senior Lanneickia Brewton (Inman, S.C.) had fourth-place finishes in the women's 60-meter (8.05 seconds) and 200-meter (26.33 seconds) dashes. 

The women's 4x400-meter relay squad of sophomore Carly Griffith (Charlotte, N.C.), sophomore Shelbie Burchfield (Morristown, Tenn.), April Thomas (Kingsport, Tenn.), and Emily Davidson (Wise, Va.) had a time of 4:14.46 to finish fifth.  Burchfield followed that up with a third-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 1.55 meters (5 feet-1 inch).

Sophomore Alexis Robinson (Belton, S.C.) finished 11th in the women's 60-meter (8.17 seconds) and ninth in the 200-meter dash (27.14 seconds).  Sophomore Atlanta Westbrook (Spring Hill, Tenn.) placed tenth in the women's 400 meters with a time of 1:01.98. 

Sophomore Maegan Henry (Bluefield, Va.) had a mark of 12.05 meters (39-6.5) in the women's shot put, good enough for fifth place.  Freshman Shayla Goins was 19th in the women's shot put with a hurl of 10.10 meters (33-1.75).

The men's 4x400-relay team of sophomore Reggie Warren (Knoxville, Tenn.), sophomore Justin Newring (Knoxville, Tenn.), freshman Alson Edgecombe (Nassau, Bahamas), and junior Jordan Tippens (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished sixth with a clip of 3:30.80.  Warren also placed eighth in the 200-meter dash and tenth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.38 seconds.  Tippens followed up his relay performance with a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter dash (51.67 seconds).

Sophomore Jordan Noe (Morristown, Tenn.) finished with a time of 2:01.60 in the men's 800-meter run and placed seventh.  Noe also took 13th in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:09.86.  Sophomore Dickson Kurgat (Naidi Hills, Kenya) finished tenth in the men's 3,000-meter run (9:00.71) and 12th in the one-mile run (4:28.74).  Freshman Brent Swiney (Bristol, Va.) placed 14th in the mile (4:29.20) and 3,000-meter run (9:00.93).  Junior Spencer Frantom (Morristown, Tenn.) took 11th in the 3,000-meter (9:00.93) and 17th in the mile-run (4:30.62).

Sophomore Forrest Stuart (Appalachia, Va.) qualified for the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.69 seconds and finished eighth in the finals (8.78).  Stuart also placed 12th in the high jump (1.84 meters, 6-0.5)

Freshman Joktan Moore (Mount Airy, N.C.) had a mark of 13.47 meters (44-2.5) to finish seventh in the men's triple jump.  Freshman Jeremy Stamper (Marion, Va.) finished 17th in the men's shot put with a mark of 12.62 meters (41-5).

Women's throwers set six personal records for the Tornado at the event, and men's throwers set five PRs.

The Tornado are back in action at the Hilton Garden Invite in Winston-Salem, N.C. next weekend, February 1-2.
