SUMTER, S.C. The King University men's tennis team opened their season at the Palmetto Tennis Center Fall Tournament after just a few days of practice. Pablo Vidal advanced to the second round of the A Draw before he fell, landing him in the consolation bracket, which he rolled through to take the consolation championship.
Both Vidal and Rodrigo Avila won their first round matches in the A Draw before dropping their second round matches. The duo then ended up in the consolation bracket where Vidal opened with a 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 win over Barton College's Max Leppert in the quarterfinals. He followed that with a straight sets 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Lees-McRae College's Joao Araujo in the semifinals before winning the final match due to default.
Leo Brigato competed in the B Draw, and he won his first match of the season, a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over Mount Olive College's Brahm Moolman in the second round. He then dropped his quarterfinal match with Mount Olive's Paul Wiederspahn 6-0, 6-2 to end his weekend.
In the C Draw, William Boyce won his first match 7-6, 6-3 over Alex Poda of Limestone College to advance to the quarterfinals. However, Robert Clark of Erskine College took a 6-3, 7-6 win from him in the quarterfinals.
King will be in action again on Wednesday when they travel to take on UVa-Wise. The dual match is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
