Conference Preseason Poll Tabs Men’s Tennis Fourth

Conference Carolinas released its preseason coaches' poll and deemed King University Men's Tennis to finish fourth in 2013.

HIGH POINT, N.C. – A season removed from advancing to its first Conference Carolinas Men's Tennis Tournament the King Tornado have been predicted to finish fourth, according to the recently released conference preseason coaches' poll. Mount Olive College was deemed the preseason favorite, followed closely by Limestone College.

Last year the Tornado finished the season 13-6 behind first-year head coach, Kethan Darbar. All-Conference selection Pablo Vidal (Madrid, Spain) led the team with 14 wins and a 7-3 record against Conference Carolinas opponents. Along with fellow junior Rodrigo Avila (Cuernavaca, Mexico), the duo possessed a 10-7 doubles play mark in the top flight.

Avila finished the year with the best in-conference record with an 8-2 mark as the team's No. 1 men's single player. In the fall season, Avila and Vidal are 3-1 in the top two singles flights and are 2-0 when paired together.

Also returning is junior Leo Brigato (Sao Paulo, Brazil), who posted a strong 4-0 mark in the fall and is expected to run in the No. 3 singles position. Last year, he went 7-11 overall predominately out of the fourth and fifth position.

King enters the season picked to finish fourth, per the 2013 Conference Carolinas Preseason Coaches' Poll. They earned 76 points, four points behind third-place Queens (N.C.).

Mount Olive earned six first-place votes to finish first in the poll with 96 points. An All-Conference Carolinas first team selection, Edgar Bub was last year's Freshman of the Year and Most Valuable Player of the 2012 Conference Carolinas Tournament. Bub enters the 2013season ranked No. 47 in the nation and No. 17 in the Southeast Region in Division II men's singles.

Limestone finished second in the preseason poll with 92 points. Rounding out the top five are Queens (80), King (76), and Coker (65) who eliminated King in the first round of the postseason tournament last season. Barton, Lees-McRae, Erskine, Pfeiffer, North Greenville, and Belmont Abbey round out the poll for positions six through 11.

King will open the Spring 2013 season at home against regional opponent Mars Hill College on Feb. 16 (1 p.m.). Following their spring season opener against the Lions, they begin a five-match road trip that concludes with Lees-McRae in the continuation of the Battle for the Blue Ridge Cup.
