BELMONT, N.C. – Men's and Women's Tennis opened the 2012 spring season this past weekend in Conference Carolinas play with a road trip to Belmont Abbey College. The Tornado and Crusaders split the day. The King men's team took home a 7-2 victory while the women's team fell to the Crusaders, 8-1.
Vitor Villar (Amparo, Brazil) won his single and doubles match as a pair with Leo Brigato (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Villar defeated BAC's Gabe Trombini, 6-2, 6-2. In his doubles match with Brigato, the duo defeated Trombini and Tom Wigley, 8-4.
Brigato also won his singles match against Wigley in three sets, 6-1, 6-7, 10-1. King took five of the six singles flights on the men's side while taking two of three doubles matches. Seth Hale (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Patrick Jones (Bluff City, Tenn.) earned an 8-0 victory over the Crusader pairing of Pat Noelke and Idris Moya.
The Lady Tornado struggled on both ends, winning one flight on the day. Sarah Anderson (Bristol, Tenn.) defeated Katharine Miller (6-2, 6-1) in the second flight of the singles competition. Eden Sherrod (Kingston, Tenn.) took the Crusader's Shannon Ramsey to a tiebreaking set but fell in the final frame (5-7, 6-1, 1-10). Kayla Ketron (Bristol, Tenn.) and Sherrod nearly stole away the second doubles flight, but lost 9-7 to Bridget Franer and Paige French.
The men's team improves to 3-0 overall, dating back to their pair of wins in the fall, 1-0 in the spring season alone. The women's team falls to 1-1 overall. The match between the Tornado and Queens (N.C.) was canceled due to weather and will be rescheduled for a later date this season. Both teams will play their first home match on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 1:00 p.m. at the King College Varsity Tennis Complex.
