BRISTOL, Tenn. – For the first time in his career, Freek Schoones of the men's soccer team has been honored with a conference weekly award. The senior assisted on a game-winning goal and scored another for the Tornado a week ago, earning him Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Offensive Player of the Week.
Schoones helped lead the Tornado to a 2-0 week, earning head coach Talon Stoud his first career win, and giving King a win in the conference opener. In the 2-1 win over Mars Hill, Schoones tallied his first career assist on what proved to be the game-winner in the 68th minute when he laced a shot that was saved, and bounced right to Faber Bickerstaffe who found the back of the net.
On Sunday, Schoones found the back of the net for the first time in his career as he put King ahead of Emmanuel 3-2 in the 88th minute. The goal came off of a corner kick from Bickerstaffe and Schoones put the ball past the keeper, giving King the 3-2 win after they started the contest down 2-0.
King is in action again on Saturday when they travel to take on the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Kickoff is slated for 8:00 p.m. (ET) from Huntsville, Ala.
