Armstrong Guides King to 1-0 Victory in Season Finale

Freshman Cheo Armstrong scored the lone goal in the Tornado's 1-0 victory over Trevecca Nazarene, Saturday afternoon.

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The men's soccer team concluded the 2012 season on a high note, winning its second straight contest to close out their season. The win was fueled by Cheo Armstrong's fourth goal of the season and a tight defense that held to a 1-0 victory at Parks Field on Saturday afternoon.

King wasted no time in pushing through the Trojan lines to take a 1-0 lead before the turn of minute number two of the match. The Tornado brought the ball up the field where junior defenseman Joshua Feener (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) drove into the Trojan zone and delivered a touch pass to Cheo Armstrong (Nashville, Tenn.) who was streaking down the field toward the TNU net. From 15 yards out, the freshman chipped the ball over Trojan goalkeeper Daniel Mudd for the score.

Trevecca Nazarene nearly evened the score in the 32nd minute but freshman goalkeeper Cameron Sauro (Owen Sound, Ontario) made a diving save on a header attempt from Jonathan Baskin. Baskin was set up for the header from 10 yards out and got a good strike on the ball but Sauro sailed from left to right and got just enough of a hand on the ball to deflect it up and off of the crossbar, saving a goal from behind scored.

Sauro again saved a potential game-tying goal when Baskin snuck deep inside the Tornado defensive zone and was on the received end of a pass for an on target attempt. Baskin positioned himself eight yards from the goal and attempted a bicycle kick but Sauro was there for the save near the far post. Donny Maciel also had a chance to even the score at 80:51 when taking a shot on the run from just inside the box but the attempt sailed over the crossbar harmlessly.

Between the Tornado's offensive attack that totaled 15 shots and four total saves by Cameron Sauro, the Tornado held on to that early 1-0 lead all the way to the final horn for their second consecutive victory. King defeated Lees-McRae in their final conference match of the season two days prior by a 3-2 count in Banner Elk, N.C. The victory over TNU was their first at home of the season.

The win was also the first of Sauro's career, as well as his first collegiate shutout. Sauro had been battling injuries for most of the season, but in his seventh and final start of 2012 he earned a well-deserved win.

Freshman Cheo Armstrong finished the season with his fourth goal of the season.

The Tornado also recognized its lone senior on the roster, Jessus Ebanks, prior to the start of the contest. The native of the Cayman Islands was unable to compete this season but will graduate at the close of the academic year.

King ends the season with a final overall record of 3-14-0 and 2-8-0 in Conference Carolinas play. Two of their three wins were taken on the road with all three wins coming in the month of October.
