HICKORY, N.C. – Tornado Men's Soccer opened the 2012 campaign in Hickory, N.C. where they met the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears. After a scoreless first half, Lenoir-Rhyne posted three goals en route to a 3-0 victory over King.
The Tornado defense was tested through the duration of the game while struggling to put pressure on the Bears, offensively. King was outshot 29-9 after 90 minutes of play.
In his first action as a Tornado, freshman goalkeeper Cameron Sauro (Owen Sound, Ontario) made five saves against nine shots on goal. King posted one team save to account for their six in the match.
Lenoir-Rhyne paired keepers Stefan Dill and Colin Corpe to combine for four saves in the shutout.
In the 77th minute of the match, Lenoir-Rhyne's Joe Green broke a scoreless tie capitalizing on a header that he batted into the cage off of a throw in by teammate Adam Crossingham. Less than three minutes later, Tobias Tobrant scored an unassisted goal, scoring a loose ball in front of Sauro in the box. At 87:54, Chris Johnson scored the Bears' third goal on a free kick to extend their lead to three goals.
Of the starting 11 on the field for the Tornado, six were first-year players for the team. Freshmen Cheo Armstrong (Nashville, Tenn.) and Ashkan Balooch (Nashville, Tenn.) each posted two shots, one each landed on net.
King (0-1, 0-0) will play its season opener against Mars Hill College on Saturday, Sept. 1. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Parks Field.
