Mayer scores twice late as Tornado ties Tusculum 2-2

BANNER ELK, N.C. - A pair of late second-half goals by Joe Mayer helped King College to a 2-2 tie in Tornado soccer season opener against Tusculum (Tenn.) College in a match played at Lees-McRae (N.C.) College.

King, with a 0-0-1 record, will play Flagler (Fla.) College Saturday at 7 p.m. in Banner Elk, N.C.

Mayer got his first score at the 87:26 mark with a through ball from Matt Kilgus. The second Mayer goal came with 32 seconds left in regulation thanks to an assist by John Simmons. The play developed when Simmons crossed the ball to Mayer.

Andres Jarquin notched both goals for Tusculum, the first in 39:02 and the next at 69:42.

Justin Morrell recorded two saves for the Tornado in goal.

Tusculum got seven saves from Andy Goellner.

The contest with Tusculum was the first time King has played the Pioneers since 2003 which went to Tusculum 2-1.

Friday's contest was also the first for Tusculum for the 2010 season.
