Four Top-10 Finishes Propel King to Title at State Farm Intercollegiate
PINEVILLE, Ky. – King College earned their first tournament championship of their 2012-13 season by winning the State Farm Intercollegiate, hosted by Lincoln Memorial University. The Tornado held off the hosts by two strokes for the team title. Richard Powell led the Tornado and finished second overall, finishing two-under par for the tournament.
Powell, a senior from Hixson, Tenn., shot a two-under 70 on the final day of the State Farm Intercollegiate to help the Tornado to the tournament victory. He finished in second place overall, trailing leader Jamie Chapman of LMU by three shots. Powell shot a 72-70-142 for the tournament, good for his second-best showing of the season.
Three additional King golfers finished inside the top-10 during the State Farm Intercollegiate, beginning with John Scott (Glasgow, Scotland). The sophomore shot matching 73s for a two-day total of 146 (+2) to finish tied for fifth place overall.
Sophomores Ross Maietta (Bexley, England) and Taylor Gouge (Elizabethton, Tenn.) each shot a 147, three-over par to close out their stay, sharing ninth place with two other individuals. Gouge, the winner from last week's King College Invitational, improved his second day score by five shots, totaling a 76-71-147.
King placed more players inside the top-10 of the individual standings than it had in any of the four tournaments it has played in this season. It is also the Tornado's first team tournament victory of the year, a fitting way to close out its fall season.
The Tornado held off the hosts, Lincoln Memorial, by two strokes after the Railsplitters (584) improved their team score by 18 strokes from day one to day two, hopping three spots into second overall. They held the individual champion, Jamie Chapman, who shot an impressive 66, four-under par for the second round.
Tusculum College (299) finished third overall followed by Belmont Abbey College (297) and Walters State Community College (304), respectively.
