PINEVILLE, Ky. – King Men's Golf finished the first round of the State Farm Intercollegiate, hosted by Lincoln Memorial University, in sole possession of first place in the team standings. The Tornado were paced by Richard Powell and Ross Maietta who both shot a 72 on day one, good for shares of third place overall. King featured three top-10 performances after the first round and will finish the tournament on Tuesday morning.
Leading the way for the Tornado were senior Richard Powell (Hixson, Tenn.) and Ross Maietta (Bexley, England), who matched scorecards with a pair of first round 72 turnouts. The duo currently share third place overall in the individual standings with three additional individuals, all of whom matched shooting even-par. Maietta led the field as one of four players with five birdies while Powell held a share for most successful par conversions with 14.
John Scott (Glasgow, Scotland) earned the last top-10 spot among the King starting five, shooting a one-over 73 on the first day of play. Taylor Gouge (Elizabethton, Tenn.), who won last week's King College Invitational men's division, finished tied for 25th with a four-over par, 76.
King as a team shot a 293 on the first day of the State Farm Intercollegiate, just five-over par for the course. The Tornado currently hold a four-shot advantage over second place Belmont Abbey and Lenoir Rhyne, who both shot a team score of 297. Rounding out the top five are Tusculum College (299) and host school Lincoln Memorial (301).
The final day of the tournament will conclude on Tuesday with play beginning at 9 a.m. at Wasioto Winds Country Club (Pineville, Ky.).
