BRISTOL, Tenn. – Richard Powell led the King men's golf team to a tie for fourth place after round one action at the Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate, held in Sevierville, Tenn. at the Sevierville Golf Club. The senior shot a 71 through 18 holes in his first round to help lead the Tornado in their first tournament of the 2012 fall season.

Powell, a Hixson, Tenn. native, was one of two golfers to shoot the best day one, front nine score 33 and one of only three in the tournament to hit a low of 33 on either the front of back nine in Monday's first round action. Powell had five birdies, tied for third most in the field, helping him to a first-round 71 (33-38) score card.

Sophomore John Scott (Glasgow, Scotland) finished with the second-lowest score of the Tornado starting five, turning in a 74 (34-40). After the front nine, Scott was just one shot off teammate Richard Powell's pace. He finished the first round in a tie for 18th overall.

Ross Maietta (Bexley, England) finished inside the top-25 of the 84-man field with an opening round 75 (36-39) and finished third in par-5 scoring (-3). Taylor Gouge (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and Michael Chua (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) rounded out the King lineup with a 78 and 86, respectively.
