King finishes SAPU Spring Invite in second, Bamberger scores Top-5
VASS, N.C. - The King College men's golf team held onto second place in the team standings of the St. Andrews Presbyterian University Spring Invitational after Tuesday's final round while the Lady Tornado squad kept fourth.
King's 315 on Tuesday was led by Josh Bamberger (Waterloo, Canada) with a 76. Bamberger remained in the Top-5 at No. 5. It was his third Top-5 in six events this year with a two-day total of 150.
Nick Carden (Hixson, Tenn.) and Richard Powell (Hixson, Tenn.) posted rounds of 79 and 80, respectively as the duo finished in a tie for eighth with a two-day score of 156. Tommy Ricker (Parrottsville, Tenn.) added an 82, three shots better than Monday's first round as he was the only King player to card a lower final round. Ricker was 12th in the individual standings. The trio of Carden, Powell and Ricker all recorded season best finishes at the event.
The Tornado's two-day total of 623 only trailed Belmont Abbey (N.C.) College who finished with a 596. The runner-up team finish was the best finish of the season for King. Individually Belmont Abbey's Peter Tarver Jones was the medalist with a 142 after a 73 Tuesday.
On the women's side the Lady Tornado were led by Kirby Jones (Franklin, Tenn.) with a 93 to tie for her season low round. She finished 13th individually with a 189 in the two rounds. Karissa King (Rockwood, Tenn.) carded a 96 with a Chelsea Gammon (Blountville, Tenn.) had a 98 which was her second lowest round of the season. Malorie McBride (Brentwood, Tenn.) added a 101.
The Lady Tornado quartet all had season best finishes led by Jones in 13th. King was 16th, McBride 18th and Gammon 20th.
King finished fourth in the team standings with a two-day total of 781 after a 388 Tuesday, five shots better than Monday.
Erskine (S.C.) College won the team standings with a 695 two-round total which included medalist honors for Janna Bontreger with a 164 over the two rounds.
Both the men and women played the Woodlake Resort as a Par-72 with the men's yardage at 6,954 while the women played at 5,943.
Next for the men will be the Rendleman Invitational March 7-8 in Salisbury, N.C. The Lady Tornado will play the Milligan Spring Invitational on March 17.
