King drops home opener to Clayton State

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's basketball team returned to the court for their first game of the season in the Student Center Complex when they took on Clayton State University. The Tornado got off to a hot start, but the Lakers went on a run to close the first half and used that momentum in the second half to take the 83-68 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • King jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a bucket from Jordan Floyd and a triple from Mike Salomon a minute into the contest.
  • Desean Enzor gave King their largest lead of the half at 16-9 when he drilled a triple eight minutes in.
  • However, the Lakers answered with six straight points to pull within one, but the Tornado responded as a Salomon triple stretched the lead back to six at 21-15 midway through the opening stanza.
  • Clayton State later used an 8-1 run to take a 27-26 lead, but Floyd responded with a bucket to put the Tornado back on top.
  • Nevertheless, Clayton State scored nine straight points, opening up a 36-28 lead before Salomon got King back on the board.
  • He drilled a pair of trifectas, pulling King within 36-34 with two minutes remaining until halftime.
  • However, the Lakers scored the final five points of the half, taking a 41-34 lead into the locker room.
  • The Lakers didn't slow down in the second half, opening the fame on an 8-3 run that put them ahead 49-37 two minutes in.
  • Every time the Tornado tried to get a run started, the Lakers had an answer. King cut their deficit to 67-56 on a Mack Owens bucket, but the Lakers quickly stretched their lead back to 15.
  • The Clayton State lead grew to as many as 20 as they took the contest 83-68.
  • Salomon led King with 15 points, 12 coming in the first half.
  • Owens followed with 12 points and eight rebounds while Je'Don Young chipped in with 11 points.

FOR THE FOES

  • Jamil McKee led the way for Clayton State, scoring 16 points to go along with 14 rebounds.
  • Justin Tuckson and Aubrey McRae added 15 points each and Denzel Council chipped in with 12 points.
