Owens' career-high lifts King past Young Harris in OT

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's basketball team won their first game of the year in exciting fashion on Wednesday night in the Student Center Complex. The Tornado came back against Young Harris College in the second half and C.J. Good sent the game to overtime with a triple with 2.8 seconds remaining in regulation. Mack Owens drilled a jump shot from 10 feet on the baseline with 1.4 seconds left in overtime, giving King the 83-81 victory.

  • Derick Pope got the Tornado off to a hot start with a layup, followed by an Owens layup. Pope then followed with a tip-in and dunk to give King an 8-2 lead three minutes in.
  • Young Harris, who was ranked 24th in the D2 Media poll this week came back and pulled within one before the teams started trading baskets.
  • The Mountain Lions went on a 13-2 run where the scored seven straight points to take the lead and open up a 28-18 advantage with six minutes remaining in the first half.
  • King came back and pulled within 32-17 following a pair of Owens free throws and Jordan Floyd scored the final point of the half on a free throw.
  • However, the Mountain Lions held a 37-28 advantage at the break.
  • Owens started the second half with a triple, trying to ignite the Tornado offense, but Young Harris had an answer each time throughout the early going of the second half.
  • With the Tornado trailing by seven, Noble Fahnbulleh sparked the King offense with a triple. King followed with a 13-4 run to take a 58-56 lead. Fahnbulleh hit another triple that was followed by trifectas from Je'Don Young and Desean Enzor before Good gave King the lead with a jump shot.
  • The Mountain Lions answered with five straight points, taking a 61-58 lead, but Owens completed a three-point play to even the score.
  • With 1:36 remaining, the Mountain Lions took a 69-65 lead, but Fahnbulleh made three free throws to bring King within 71-68 with 29 seconds remaining.
  • King then called for timeout, and out of the break, Good drilled his first triple of the game, coming from the left wing with a hand in his face with 2.8 seconds reamaining, sending the contest to overtime.
  • Good got the first points of overtime, but Bjorn Walker of Young Harris answered.
  • Another Good trifecta and a pair of free throws from Fahnbulleh gave king a 78-73 lead with three minutes remaining.
  • The Mountain Lions had one last run, scoring eight of the next 11 points, evening the score at 81-81 with 18 seconds remaining.
  • King Head Coach George Pitts again called for timeout to draw up a play. Owens found himself alone on the baseline and drilled the jump shot from 10 feet, with 1.4 seconds remaining, giving King the 83-81 triumph.
  • Owens led four scorers in double figures with 24 points to go along with six rebounds.
  • Fahnbulleh and Good followed with 14 points apiece while Pope chipped in with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
  • The Tornado shot 45.6 percent from the field and outrebounded the Mountain Lions 40-29.


  • Young Harris had five players in double figures and were led by Marcellus Roberts' 16 points.
  • C.J. Wilson followed with 15 points to go along with 10 assists while Ben Waterhouse added 13.
  • Darrius Sizemore scored 11 points and Walker tallied 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
  • The Mountain Lions shot 55.4 percent from the floor and 45.0 percent from three-point range.


  • Owens' 24 points mark a career-high, topping his previous best of 16 set in the NCAA Tournament against Lenoir-Rhyne University.


  • King stays at home to face Lander University on Saturday. Tipoff from the Student Center Complex is slated for 4:00 p.m.
  • Young Harris hosts Virginia State University on Saturday.
