BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University baseball team swept the Tennessee Sports Writers Association weekly awards this week as J.P. Castaneda was named Player of the Week and Octavio Mirabal was selected Pitcher of the Week.
The Miami, Fla., native had a huge week for the Tornado, helping King a Conference Carolinas sweep of Southern Wesleyan University. Castaneda started the week by going 5-for-5 with a double and one run scored at the University of Charleston (W.Va.). Castaneda followed that by going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in and two runs scored in a suspended game against Lincoln Memorial University. Over the weekend he posted four hits in the series against Southern Wesleyan and drove in three runs with a double in an 8-1 win over the Warriors.
Mirabal was forced into action due to injury early in the opening game of the Conference Carolinas series against Southern Wesleyan University. The Miami, Fla., native didn't disappoint, tossing eight and one-thirds shutout innings. He retired the first 13 batters he faced, allowing only two hits and only allowed one runner to reach third base in the outing...The win for Mirabal was his fifth of the season.
The award for each is the first of the season and first of their careers. Earlier this week, Castaneda was named Conference Carolinas Player of the Week.
King is in action again this weekend when they face North Greenville University in a Conference Carolinas series that starts with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday with first pitch at 1:00 p.m.
