BELMONT, N.C. – The King University baseball team had their first Conference Carolina's game against Belmont Abbey on Friday afternoon. The Tornado were within two runs in the late innings, but an 11 run bottom of the seventh led to the Tornado falling 16-5.

KING HIGHLIGHTS

  • Dougas went 1-for-4 with two runs batted in.
  • Ruiz was 1-for-3 with a RBI double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Belmont Abbey scored two runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a Krause RBI groundout to take the early lead 2-0.
  • King cut into the lead in the top of the third when Douglas reached base on an error by the shortstop, scoring Bailey who had singled earlier in the inning to make the score 2-1.
  • The Crusaders tacked three more runs in the bottom of the third, when Elefante doubled down the right field line scoring Rosenbaum who had doubled earlier in the inning. Cureton then doubled to left center, scoring Elefante, then Yoder tripled to center to drive in Cureton.
  • Douglas drove in Bailey who had walked earlier in the inning in the top of the fifth to make the score 5-2 with a Sac fly to left field.
  • The Tornado added another run in the top of the sixth to pull within two runs, 5-3 when Ruiz doubled to right center, driving home Castaneda who had singled to right field earlier in the inning.
  • Belmont Abbey had an 11 run bottom of the seventh that made the score 16-3, highlighted by Yoder's three run double. Stanley also had a two run triple in the inning.
  • Freshman Ethan Jenkins got his first career RBI in the top of the ninth with a Sac fly to right that scored Zak Kitzmiller who singled to third base earlier in the inning, Douglas then followed with a RBI single to right, driving home Kitzmiller, to make the score 16-5 which ended up being the final.

FOR THE FOES

  • Yoder went 2-for-5 with five runs batted in, including a three run double and a RBI triple, and scored a run.
  • Lead-off hitter Genthe was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, two runs scored, and had two walks.
