Cobras Bite into Tornado’s Streak
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – King College's eight-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of Coker College after the Cobras delivered a 10-3 loss to the Tornado on Sunday afternoon. Danny Laperna posted a pair of hits while Brad Blanton notched two ribbies.
Coker drew first blood with a pair of three-run innings in the second and third frames. King was marred by a pair of errors and a hit batsman in the second inning that allowed two of the three scoring runs on base. Tornado pitcher Wesley Houser (2-2) walked Coker's leadoff batter and allowed three straight singles as pair of the Cobras second three-run frame to go up 6-0 early on the Tornado.
Brad Blanton (Ashland, Ky.) helped the Tornado half the lead by driving home a pair of runs on a two-run, two-out single to left, scoring Carl Roberts and Jarrod Payne. Tyler Orndorff came around following a throwing error by Coker third baseman Fico Kondla, but the inning ended when Blanton was thrown out at the plate trying to score on the play.
The Cobras added two more to their lead in the fifth inning on a run-scoring single and failed pickoff attempt at third base. Coker plated two more in the seventh inning on a two-run single by Jake Frazier, leading to a 10-3 final score.
King tallied eight hits on the day, spread out over seven players. Danny Laperna (Lake Worth, Fla.) led the team with two hits, both singles.
The Tornado and Cobras will end their three-game set on Monday with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m. Game one will be a nine-inning game with game two last seven innings. Live stats and video will be provided at www.cokercobras.com.
