GREENVILLE, S.C. – King College's Nick Melcher earned the NCCAA Division I Baseball Student-Athlete of the Week award, the national office announced.
Melcher, a sophomore from Orlando, Fla., threw in the Tornado's final three games of the NCCAA Mid-East Region Championship. He threw seven scoreless innings of relief. His week started on Thursday against Bluefield (Va.) College with 2/3 of an inning of work with a save. The next day he tossed 5 1/3 innings of shutout baseball against Covenant (Ga.) College to help keep King in the game. The only blemish was a hit batter with two strikeouts. In the region championship contest, also against Covenant, Melcher went an inning and allowed one hit.
King won the NCCAA Mid-East Region Championship and qualified for the NCCAA Division I World Series where the team went 2-2 in pool play. The Tornado closed 2011 with a 28-25 record, the fifth straight season with at least 28 wins for the program.
The award is the third time King has won the weekly honor during the baseball season and the first since Feb. 17.
