Late Concord rally overtakes Tornado

BRISTOL, Tenn. - King College was three outs away from a weekend sweep, but a six-run ninth inning by Concord (W.Va.) University resulted in a 7-4 win for the visitors Sunday.

King went to 5-4 after the game while Concord left with a 1-5 record. The Tornado won the first two games of the series Saturday with similar 4-3 scores.

Concord sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the ninth in the rally. The Mountain Lions put the first three batters of the ninth inning on base against relief pitcher Brandon Houser (Kodak, Tenn.). After a pitching change brought Nick Melcher (Orlando, Fla.) he was greeted by Keith Morrisroe who doubled to right to push in two runs. A walk meant a change to bring Dustin Pannell (Aiken, S.C.) into pitch. Kyle Webb's ground ball up the middle did not lead to an out with a run and a double by Bret Blevins meant two more runs to break the 4-4 tie. A sacrifice fly was tacked on by Randy Beard.

King scored first thanks to a C.J. Stabler (Kingsport, Tenn.) home run to lead off the fourth over the left field fence. It was the first home run for any King player this season.

Concord tried to tie the game in the seventh, but Nick Sydnor was thrown out at home after a two-out single from Jacob Mays. Bryant Walker (Knoxville, Tenn.) recorded his second assists on the throw to the Tornado's Doug Freeman (Lakeland, Fla.) at home.

King posted three runs in the seventh thanks to a two-run home run by Heath Williams (Bristol, Va.) after a Shane Timberlake (Lynchburg, Va.) RBI double allowed Freeman to score. Williams extended his hitting streak to five games with the long ball.

A two out double into right center from Shane Timberlake (Lynchburg, Va.) with two outs allowed Freeman to score King's second run. That was followed by a home run to left off Williams' bat.

Blevins drove in Morrisroe thanks to a single to left in the eighth to put Concord on the scoreboard for the first time.

Freeman had a team-high three hits and he walked once.

King's Zach Winkle (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished eight innings and scattered eight hits with the one run. He struck out three, walked two and hit a Concord, but did not factor in the decision.

The win went to Brandon Proctor with 1 1/3 innings. One of the outs came via a strikeout. Josh Wenger got the final out, a strikeout, with two Tornado base runners on for a save.

Blevins had three hits while Nick Sydnor added two.
