BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has named their student-athletes of the month for the month of September. Tanner Cook of the men’s cross country team and Cathy Scaniffe of the women’s volleyball team took home honors this month.
Cook started his senior season with a pair of stellar finishes at the Eye Opener Invitational and the Asheville XC Carnival. Among NCAA Division II runners, Cook finished first at the Eye Opener Invitational, covering the 8k distance in 26:23.90, leading King to a second place finish. He followed that with a second place finish at the Asheville XC Carnival. The Abingdon, Va., native finished the 8k course in 26:34.40 to lead the Tornado. Cook was named Conference Carolinas Runner of the Week following his performance at the Eye Opener Invitational.
Scaniffe led the Tornado to a great start in Conference Carolinas play where King won their first five matches and went 5-1 in league play in September. For the month, the Lorton, Va., native averaged 3.17 kills per set and 1.14 digs per set. She reached double figures in kills eight times and posted her first career double-double in a 3-2 win over Limestone College. In the match Scaniffe registered a career-high 23 kills and added a career-best 10 digs. The following day she posted a career-high six service aces against Converse College. Following a 3-0 start to Conference Carolinas play, including Scaniffe’s match against Limestone, she was selected Conference Carolinas Player of the Week and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Offensive Player of the Week.
