King upsets #4 North Greenville in doubleheader split

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University baseball team wrapped up their home schedule with a doubleheader split with #4 North Greenville, including a 9-4 upset victory in the second game.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • It took until the third inning for either team to score, and it was the Trailblazers who scored in the top of the frame, before adding four more in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the inning, Medford stepped up to the plate with one out and hit the second pitch he saw over the left center field fence to get King on the board, 5-1.
  • After three North Greenville runs in the top of the sixth, King scored two runs in the bottom, including an RBI single by Starrs, while Nuno picked up an RBI the hard way, getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring King to within 8-3.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • King jumped on the Trailblazers early, striking for three runs in the first, including an RBI double by Nuno and a two-run home run to left center by Starrs.
  • The Tornado continued their onslaught in the second, adding four more runs, including a pair of RBI singles by Roper and Nuno, along with a two-RBI single to center by Starrs that allowed Nuno and Roper to score, making it an early 7-0 King lead.
  • The Trailblazers scored one run in the top of the third, though King got the run back in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Medford hit a two-out double, scoring when Borchardt took the third pitch and hit a double to right center field, extending the lead to 8-1.
  • Borchardt also hit a solo home run, coming on the second pitch of the seventh inning to give King a 9-1 lead.
  • North Greenville made things close at the end, scoring three runs in the top of the ninth before Caleb Green got a game-ending flyout to center field, securing the second ranked win of the season for King.

FOR THE FOES
  • Tristan Salinas was 3-for-4 in the second game, one of just two Trailblazers to have multiple hits, along with two from Landon Shaw.
  • The Trailblazers had nine hits in the second game, none of which were extra-base hits.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The win snapped what had been a 14-game losing streak to North Greenville, and was King's first win over North Greenville since April 12, 2021.
  • This is the first time since 2021 that King has beaten two ranked teams in the same season.
  • Dickenson was also the winning pitcher last year when King upset then-#25 UNC Pembroke on senior day, a day where he also threw seven innings.
