HUNTSVILLE, AL. – The King University men's cross country team competed in the UAH Chargers XC Invitational on Saturday, October 11th.
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a race that saw a couple unfortunate injuries sustained by a couple of the Tornado men, freshmen, Joshua Hathaway, stepped up and was the top performer with a finishing time of 27:54 for the 8k. Hathaway was aggressive as he went out the first mile in 5:09 and crossed through the 5k point in 17:00, both of which he has never done in a cross country race. His high school PR in the 5k was 17:29 so he has made phenomenal progression.
- Sophomore, Cole Johnson, was running a great race and was well on pace through the 5k point in 16:40 to run a huge PR on target for 26:30 for the 8k before he had to bow out of the race with half a mile to go.
COACH BRUNECZ'S THOUGHTS
"The team performed much better within the race than the results showed. We had one athlete who it was planned to hop off course at the 5k point as he is bouncing back from an injury and he did a great job of what we wanted to accomplish today. Cole was running the best 8k race of his life until about half a mile to go when an injury flared up and he did the right thing by hopping off course so we can treat it and get him as close to 100% as we approach championship season and our next meet is our conference championship. I'm really glad that he recognized that and did the right thing for himself and the team. Both of these young men could have finished their races and sure that would have helped us in the team standings, but it would not have been worth it. We didn't need to be great today. We need to be great at conference on October 24th."

The King University cross country teams travel to Ivey Redmon Sports Complex located in Kernersville, North Carolina on Friday, October 24th to compete at the Conference Carolinas Cross Country Conference Championships.
