Katy Neubert of the King University women's cross country and track & field teams was honors with Conference Carolinas' most prestigious award, the Murphy Osborne Award. Neubert becomes the second Tornado to earn the award, joining Rodrigo Avila in 2014.
Neubert has won numerous awards in her four years on campus, athletically and academically. She helped the Tornado women's cross country team win three Conference Carolinas title, including each of the last two when she earned the Conference Carolinas Elite 23 Award. She garnered third team all-conference honors in 2019 and second team distinction in 2020.
On the track, she won the Conference Carolinas Indoor championship in the 800 meters in 2020 and 2021 and finished runner-up in 2022. She was also a member of the 2022 conference champion distance medley relay in 2022 and third place finishing team in 2023. She also earned the Conference Carolinas Elite 23 Award during the 2021 outdoor season. Last season she broke her own school record with an 800 meter time of 2:18.71 at the Montreat College Invitational.
Neubert is a two-time College Sports Communicators (CSC, formerly CoSIDA) All-District selection for cross country/track & field in 2021 and 2022. In 2022, she garnered CSC Academic All-America honors, becoming the first Tornado since 2016-17 to earn that honor, and second in the history of the King women's cross country and track & field programs. In 2022 she was also selected Conference Carolinas Scholar-Athlete of the Year for indoor track & field.
The Johnson City, Tenn., native carries a 4.00 GPA while majoring in Cell and Molecular Biology and minoring in Psychology. She is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society and earned the Eula Cosby Coffey Award, awarded to the highest class average in general physics at King.
Neubert is also incredibly active on campus where she serves as a Resident Assistant, a Toxicology Research Student and a Pre-Health Professionals Representative. A general biology and general and organic chemistry teaching assistant, Neubert is a Snider Honors Program student at King. In addition, Neubert has also volunteered at ECHO Global Farms in Fort Myers, Florida and at the RAM Pop-Up Clinic in Hazard, Kentucky and Emory, Virginia. She has also spent time as a first-grade reading buddy at Anderson Elementary in Bristol, Tennessee.
Neubert joins men's tennis player Avila as the only two Tornado individuals to earn this prestigious award.
Student-Athletes are nominated by their institutions based on their academic, athletic and service accomplishments. The Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) from all Conference Carolinas institutions submit institutional nominations and votes are cast by the FARs.
To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be a December or May graduating senior or a first-year graduate student completing athletic eligibility at the same institution as undergraduate matriculation. The student-athlete must be a full-time student at the time of nomination, must have been a full-time student at the member school for at least two years and must be a starter or important substitute in a conference sport.
The award is named for longtime educator and college and university administrator Dr. Murphy Osborne.
