King falls to Emmanuel

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women's volleyball team took a set from Emmanuel University Saturday afternoon, but were unable to pull out the win, falling 3-1 in their final home contest of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • After Emmanuel took an early lead, the Tornado scored consecutive points, including a Kara Miller kill to bring them even at six.
  • The Lions would then retake the lead, working it to 14-11 before the Tornado scored three in a row, with Miller and Hailee Blankenship both picking up kills to tie the score at 14.
  • Emmanuel started to pull away after the Tornado tied the score at 15, scoring five of the next six points to open up a 20-16 advantage.
  • King rallied back, pulling even at 21 after a kill by Abigale Jayne that capped a 4-0 Tornado scoring run.
  • It would turn into a back-and-forth affair, with both teams having multiple chances at set point before Emmanuel won the set 31-29.
Second Set
  • King raced out to an early 4-2 lead, with Jayne picking up an early service ace.
  • After the lead reached 8-6, the Lions would score the next six points, taking a 12-8 advantage.
  • Emmanuel's lead eventually reached 19-13, but the Tornado started to storm back, with Blankenship getting consecutive kills to bring the Tornado to within 19-15.
  • After Emmanuel took a 21-16 lead, the Tornado would end the set in a huge way, winning nine of the final 10 points, with Jayne recording four kills, including the set winner, handing the Tornado a 25-22 win.
Third Set
  • Emmanuel held a slim 3-1 lead early before the Tornado used a 3-1 run to erase the lead, tying the set at four.
  • The Tornado took their first lead of the set at 9-8 on a Jayne kill that came in the midst of a 3-0 Tornado run.
  • King re-took the lead, and were able to work it to a three point advantage at 19-16, but the Lions after taking a timeout, rallied, eventually tying the score at 23.
  • Emmanuel would have three chances at set point, but the first two ended up with Tornado points before they won the set 27-25.
Fourth Set
  • Emmanuel scored five of the first seven points, including a 4-0 scoring run that was ended by Abigail Belcher picking up a kill.
  • After a 7-0 Lions scoring run saw them open up a 13-4 lead, the Tornado would score on a block by Chloe Clayton and Blankenship before another 4-0 Emmanuel scoring run opened up a 17-5 advantage.
  • The lead eventually reached 19-8, but the Tornado had another brief rally in them, scoring the next four points to pull to within 19-12, forcing Emmanuel to take a timeout.
  • Emmanuel would end the set on a 6-2 scoring run, taking the set 25-14 and the match 3-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Blankenship led all players, finishing with 21 kills and 17 digs.
  • Puertas had 29 digs.
  • Katie Harless handed out 45 assists.
FOR THE FOES
  • Layla Bland had 18 kills, while Alaina Emminger had 15.
  • Gabrielle McGlamery had 52 assists.
  • Bland also led the Lions with 19 digs, while Asia Queen had 17.
UP NEXT
  • King will close the regular season Monday night at Belmont Abbey College. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
  • Emmanuel will host North Greenville University Monday.
