Defense lifts King past Alice Lloyd

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women's basketball team used solid defense to earn their first win of the season on Tuesday afternoon. The Tornado held Alice Lloyd College below their season averages to take the contest 69-61.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Period
  • The Tornado got off to a hot start on two baskets from Alexa Gramann in the opening minute before the teams traded points.
  • The scored was tied three times before an Ashley Allen basket broke the tie for the final time, giving King a 9-7 lead midway through the period.
  • That ignited an 8-0 run that gave the Tornado a 15-7 lead following a Jhayda McKinney triple and two free throws from Jaelyn West.
  • The Eagles scored the final three points of the period, but the Tornado led 15-10 after the opening 10 minutes.
Second Period
  • West scored the first four points of the second period before King went on a 6-0 following an Eagle basket.
  • Alana Smith converted a three-point play and Allen converted a free throw to give the Tornado a 25-12 advantage.
  • The Eagles made a run and pulled within 27-22 before baskets from Jaylasia Office and Torey Walker extended the King lead.
  • However, Alice Lloyd scored five straight points before a Brianna Dunbar free throw gave King a 32-27 lead at the break.
Third Period
  • Alice Lloyd started the second half on a 6-2 to pull within 34-33 in the opening three minutes, but King responded.
  • Jaden Potts knocked down a pair of triples and Allen converted a layup to keep the Tornado ahead at 42-37 midway through the period.
  • The King lead was cut two one on two more occasions, but each time the Tornado had an answer.
  • The final time, Walker made a layup and a Dunbar free throw gave King a 47-43 lead going to the fourth quarter.
Fourth Period
  • Smith and Walker combined to score the first four points of the final stanza and stretch the King lead to eight points.
  • Following a pair of Alice Lloyd free throws, Allen made a jump shot and West connected from long range to give King a 56-45 lead with eight minutes remaining.
  • However, the Eagles scored seven straight points over the next minute to cut their deficit to 56-52.
  • A McKinney triple stretched the King lead back to seven and the Tornado held that advantage the rest of the way to take the contest 69-61.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • King held the Alice Lloyd offense below their season averages for points, field goals and field goal percentage.
  • The Tornado were led by 11 points from Dunbar and West while Smith chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds.
  • West accounted for eight rebounds while Dunbar grabbed five rebounds and handed out three assists.
  • Potts contributed nine points while Allen added seven points and nine rebounds.
FOR THE FOES
  • Hannah Kash led Alice Lloyd with 21 points, four rebounds and five assists.
  • Kenzie Maynard added 14 points and six rebounds while Katie Joe Moore chipped in with 10 points and four rebounds.
